note: When my first child was born, I had plethora of breast milk flowing out of me. These breast milk storage bags were God-sent. (Not to mislead in any way - I didn't have exactly these bags, but something similar that weren't bio-degradable.) I viewed every little ounce of break milk as gold - thousands of live enzymes, cells, minerals, and vitamins are stored in one ounce of milk! There was no way I was going to just dump them out! Better to save them for raining days, or mix it with rice cereal when my baby would start solid. Best part about this breakmilk bag is that you don't have to feel guilty about throwing away one-time-use storage bag that was going to just stay in our landfill for hundreds, if not thousand years without rotting. These bags will bio-degrade! No more feeling guilty! It's a great gift for eco-conscious moms.

How do I properly store my breast milk?

The manufacturer of this product recommends

  • Room Temperature (66-72oF/19-22oC): Use immediately
  • Refrigerator (32-39oF/0-4oC): Up to 24 hours
  • Freezer (varies): Up to 3 months

However, I've read anywhere from 4-10 hours at room temperature, up to 8 days in the refrigerator and up to 6-12 months in the freezer. I highly recommend storing the milk in the back of the refrigerator or freezer, not near the door.

My baby is ready to drink my stored milk. What do I do?

If your breast milk has been stored in the refrigerator, simply warm the milk by placing the bag in a bowl of warm water until it's at room temperature. If your breast milk is frozen, thaw it over night in the refrigerator and warm the milk right before feeding. For a quick thaw, place the bag in a running warm water. Shake the bag a bit to make sure temperature is even throughout. Do not refreeze thawed breast milk.

Best way to judge if the breast milk is at the right temperature for the baby is to place a drop from the bottle on your wrist. If it feels cold, it's cold. If it feels hot, it's way too hot. If it feels warm, use your best judgement. You don't want it to be too warm. Luke warm/room temperature is best.

My frozen and refrigerated breast milk changed color. Is this OK?

Breast milk that has been stored in the freezer or refrigerator may look a bit different from fresh squeezed breast milk. This does not necessarily mean it's spoiled. The composition of breast milk can vary by day and night, and by month to month. It's absolutely normal for one bag of breast milk to look orange and another bag to look slightly blue, brown, yellow, or green. You may also see different layers of breast milk - fatty layer and watery layer.

I kept the milk longer than recommended. How do I know my stored breast milk has gone bad?

Best way to judge rather your breast milk is good or bad is to smell it and taste it. If you don't want to taste it, just discard the milk.  Better to be safe than have your baby drink spoiled milk.

What should I do with all the left over breast milk?

If you have more than enough, you can donate these precious breast milk .
